The CDC reports that 30% of Americans do not get enough sleep each night.
This means that at least 40 million Americans are not functioning at their highest level. Essentially turning them into zombies. If you don’t get enough sleep here are 5 things that can happen to you.
Decreased Alertness-this can lead to things such as car accidents and missing important meetings.
Negative Health impacts- things such as heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and a lower sex drive.
Negatively impact your mood- when you don’t get enough sleep you are more irritable. This could lead to you having a fight with your partner causing serious relationship issues. You could say something to your boss or coworker that you normally wouldn’t say if you had enough sleep. No wonder zombies are always attacking they want to be back in their graves sleeping.
Relying on caffeine to stay awake- Americans on average drink about 2 cups of coffee each day. At 1st the caffeine may help you to stay awake and get going. But the bad news about caffeine is there is always a crash somewhere in the middle of the day. Which could affect your mood and your ability to focus on work.
Becoming withdrawn- when you don’t get enough sleep it can cause you to become less interested in activities that you enjoy or doing things like exercising. Which then can lead to depression because you feel like you’re missing out on life.
The good news is there is a way to begin getting proper sleep.
1. The 1st thing you need to do is decide what time you want to wake up each morning. Once you have done this, then 2. figure out what time you need to go to bed to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night (8 hours is best). Once you have figured out what time you need to wake up and go to bed begin 3. adjusting your sleep schedule by 15 minutes each week until you reach the time that you want to go to bed.
4. Develop a relaxing bedtime routine. Too many of us now either watch TV or play on our cell phones until we feel that it is time to go to sleep. This routine keeps us awake longer and prevents us from getting quality sleep.
Some ideas for a better routine include 5. taking a bubble bath, 6. reading a good book, and 7. meditating.
Now get some sleep and wake up tomorrow feeling like your best self instead of a zombie.
